Inuit Throat Singers, Nunuvut, Canada
Timmongiak Petaulassie & Qauunaq Mikkigak

Listen to Sample MP3

This show took many "firsts" in the producing of the Oyate series. We went the farthest, spent the most on travel, first time paying an interpreter, and on and on. It is also probably one of our favorite programs. Milt was determined to record throat singing and was thrilled to find these two women at the top of the world who were willing to let him record.

Cape Dorset is at the top of Hudson Bay. Twice a day it is part of Baffin Island and it is the home of the Inuit. We learned that 60% of the soapstone Inuit art comes from this village. It is difficult for most of us to even imagine life in such a remote and sometimes heartless land, and yet is home to Quanaq and Timmunquak

The women explain through our interpreter that throat singing, in the old days, was treated like a child's game, done for fun and laughter rather like the old staring game where two people stare at each other until one of them cracks. But the sounds are amazing. The two women get inches from each other's mouth and begin singing at each other. The rhythm and sounds are incredible.
